The Difference Between Icr and Heart/Radio Suffolk

Comparing a National and a Regional Radio Programme.

A regional radio station differs from a national radio station as a regional radio station only has the news and traffic reports from things happening in and around that area. Also regional stations have songs from local artists who are not proffesional and are not in and around the music charts.
Also the news and traffic reports are more detailed on a local programme as somedays not much will be happening in a local area so they have more time to talk about the smaller things that are happening in that area at the time.
The local stations do this so that it gives the local artists a chance to show off some of their work to people so that they might be able to earn a recording contract also by doing this they might get people listening to the station at that time to ring in and buy some of their CD's that is if they like their type of music . Also a regional station has more detailed news and sports bulletins about the local events.
Where as a national radio station covers things from around the world and has songs that come from other countries as well as Great Britain. Also national radio stations would give you traffic reports from all around the UK. They also have a larger record library to select there music that they play on there radio station from.
Regional stations are more likely to have more competitions from which listeners can win prizes. Another way in how regional stations differ from a national station is that a regional station has more unknown reporters who are from local areas to near that station. Where as on a national radio station all the reporters and disk jockeys are more well known then ones on a local radio station.
On a regional station you can only listen to it if you are in that area where as in a national radio station you can listen to it where ever you want and you should not have an interferance with your reception that you will be getting on your radio.
Also on a regional station you will only get ads that are from that local area also you will get local helplines. Where as on a national radio station you will get ads from all around the world and you will national helplines which you will have to call if you want any more information on these different adverts that will be played during the various shows through out the day.

Internet Radio Research

Internet Radio is now very popular due to the success of the Internet and faster connections allowing streaming to happen virtually un-disturbed. Internet radio is good as it can either be delievered via podcast or via live streaming where you can just listen in live just like you would with a normal, so this is the closest you will get to the normal conventional way of listening. With a podcast you can download it and listen to it as many times as you like. Also with all the new technology you can access a new listen again feature which means if you miss a show the first time you can still listen to it again on the internet and once again like podcasts you can download them and listen to them as many times as you like. If you listen to an internet radio show via live streaming you will find that they don't usually contain advertisements due to very low/no running costs. Another good thing about Internet Radio is that it requires no formal training so anyone can do it, and it is a very good way for young up and coming presenters/djs to get there foot into the door and make a name for themselves in the business.

What is instore radio?

It is now becoming popular to have in store radios and most of the up to date stores which are very technilogical have them, as it helps to promote them and can sometimes gain them those vital extra sales. One of the most well know stores to do this is Asda. One station that provides radio for many stores is Headland Media they provide instore radio for many companies one of which is Asda Fm. On Asda Fm they mainly have a 90-10 ratio of Music and Speech, with 90% Music and 10% Speech, All the speech is mainly for advertising perposes advertising the shop and all the instore deals that they currently have going on at asda, and the music is mainly songs that they will sell instore or are relevant to the type of people that shop in there store.

Radio Suffolk Research

Radio Suffolk:- Sports Programme.

I listened to this show on the way home from football it was reaction after Ipswich Town's 0-0 Draw with Peterborough Utd. The Shows presenter was fairly informal and he was rude to some of the callers and he questioned some of there views. During this Half an hour there was the ten o'clock news and thenm there were two traffic reports. Which were made to help people travelling home from the football.

There was one song played in the time when I was listening, it was Nine Million Bicycles in Bejing by Katie Melua. The song that was played was not a very lively one it was a quiet song which would help any one get back to sleep easily or it would get you to sleep. This song was played as it was fairly late at night and if the song was too lively it would wake up listeners who were in bed listening to the game.

There was four telephone calls from some Ipswich Town fans then there was an interview with the Ipswich Town Manager Roy Keane. The shows presenter was fairly rude to two of the callers as he was questioning everything they said and seemed to be taking the mickey of them without them realising.

After The ten o'clock news a song was played in the background whilst in the foreground they played some of the highlights from a fairly eventful match. Also there was a jingle that was about the new speedway season that was coming up. Saying that presenters from the show would be there giving free car stickers to show that you were supporting the new speedway seaon that soon gets underway. The trouble with this show would be if you did not like sport or do not understand it then this show is not for you as you have to be a sports fan to understand this show as quite a lot of this show is relating to sport and different sports events that were happening that night ,such as all the champions league games around the world.
But this show is great for a sports fan as it keeps them up to date with what is happening all whilst they are travelling home. This show cannot be planned in advance very much such as scripts being wrote as they commentate on the match that is being played and that is live, so they just have to make it up as they go along but they can write a script for what they say before the game as nothing has yet happened so all there facts are correct.

ICR FM 15min Demo Evaluation

ICR Evaluation

I thought that ICR was going to be the hardest because before this assignment I had never listened to ICR before in my life. So because of this I decided to do more research than all the others and I ended up listening to four shows for 15minutes and from this I was able to work out that generally they play around about 3 songs ing every 15mins, so thats what I decided to use, and as this had to be a talk show I thought I should have a topic, so what I choice is general upto date news and I got a paper and read out some of the stories. If I did this again then I would have made sure that I had a caller or a guest to interview and ask there views on some of the questions because at times in this it seems like im just trying to fill the gaps and I am not very interested in what I was talking about so that may have turned some listeners away. Also, I had the same microphone as I did in my heart demo so like in that if i did it again I would make sure that my voice recordings of my speech are of a better quality.

Asda Fm 15 minute demo Evaluation

Asda Fm Evaluation

For this demo I listened to a show on Asda Fm for 15minutes to find out what type of things they played, from this I was able to find out that they play a very big variety of songs and they play a lot of Jingles that include offers and different new deals and things that will be coming up in there shop. So from that I decided to sound like asda fm i should do Jingles of deals around the store too, So I went onto their website and found some of the best and some unknown deals that i would be able to use in my demo, so that it would sounds more like asda fm. Although if I did this again I would make sure that my show flowed a bit more as at times it is just jingle after jingle about deals and there is no connection between them, but there is also times where it flows really well, for example from where there is a deal talking about cheryl coles newest book and a deal on that it then goes straight into Cheryl Coles song Fight For this Love.

Evaluation For Group Radio Show

Group Radio Show Evaluation

For our assignment we had to get into groups and create a 30mintue show, it could be at any time of the day but had to be for SNC Live (the college's own radio station) so it had to be aimed at students. In our group we decided to do an afternoon show, which was called Hammy and The Derp, these were the nicknames of the main two presenters and so we incorporated all members of our group in a main presenting role we had a special guest presenter for one day only "Crazy Dave".

Overall I think we worked well as a group as we all did our part and we assigned each other with roles within the group such as script writer and the jingle maker, my main role was creating the scripts and the running orders and finding all the songs that we needed for our show. Another thing that worked well is that we all got on as a group, and as most of our show was only loosely scripted we were able to create a bit of banter between each other if we got stuck for something to say or needed to fill up a bit of extra time which in the end was needed as we needed to fill an extra mintue up at the end so we achieved our 30minute target.

So we reached out to our target audience of students, we thought we would have a section in the show where we talked about television, and we tried to pick out the most popular shows with students such as family guy and xfactor. We also tried to pick songs that were fairly popular or were in the type of music genre that most students listen to. Also when we did our news section we tried to pick things that would intrest students or things that were topical and that we may be able to make a joke of such as im a celebrity get me out of here.

If we were to do our show again I would make sure we knew the levels of things a bit more, as I thought at times the levels were very up and down also our voices were sometimes a bit like that. I would also change the way we said umm quite a lot, we only said this when we were on the loosely scripted stuff, so if i did it again I think that I would script it a bit more or I would make sure we knew more about it as at times if we are saying umm all the time it can sound quite unproffesional other than that I thought it sounded like I would expect to hear on a normal radio station such as Heart Fm.

Overall I was very happy with how the whole show went and I thought that it sounded quite proffesional and after listening to it again it is something that I would certainly want to listen to as it was always entertaining and at times it was fairly humerous.

Heart Fm 15 Minute Demo Evaluation

Heart Fm Evaluation

For this demo I had to do a breakfast show, so I listened one morning show and a couple of podcasts that I found on the heart website, and from these I found that they talked about all the reality tv shows that were on at that present time, so from that, I decided to do the same thing, but instead of talking about it like they did I thought I would get a caller on the line, I did this because I thought it would make the show more interesting. Although if I did this again I would make sure that my voice recordings of my speech are of a better quality as at times it sounds like I keep fadeing in and out, but im not supposed to be I think there was a problem with the microphone I was using. But appart from that I was very happy with my finished show.

Radio Suffolk 15min Demo Evaluation

Radio Suffolk Evaluation

I decided to imtate a sports show that I listened to on one saturday when Ipswich werent playing, I also listened to one phone in after a match to get more of an idea of what they play and things on a mathchday. So from what I heard in this show I was able to find out what type of music they would play and what type of content the show would include and when I came up with the finished show I was very happy with how my show went as I thought it sounded quite a lot like the original show. Although if I did do it again, I would make sure the mic was kept still at all times as because at times whilst I was talking you could hear rustling and the movement of the wire which went to the mic, but apart from that I was happy with my show and thought that it sounded fairly proffesionall in how it flowed and in how I had got things to fade in and out at the correct times.

Good afternoon and welcome to the match day show on radio Suffolk with me James Kindred, with Ipswich not playing today we will be around the grounds getting regular updates but first to start of the show here is Tubthumping by Chumbawama.

Track

What a great track that is to start the show off with, well as I said earlier Ipswich aren’t playing until tomorrow, so we will be getting regular updates from around the grounds. And talking of that Liverpool’s game against stoke has just finished here’s Jonathan Pearce with the result and what happened.

Match description by Jonathan Pearce

What a great result for Liverpool that was then, they are still high flying at the top of the Barclays premiership, with that lets go to John Motson at Stamford bridge to see how Liverpool’s nearest rivals Chelsea are getting on.

Commentary By John Motson

Well if that stays like that then it will still be very close at the top of the Barclays premiership tonight now for our next track here is the farm with all together now.

The Task

The Task

For this assignment our task was to research and then create four 15minute demos these demos will include doing a running order and scripts. The demos had to be for:

-A weekend show for Radio Suffolk

-A breakfast show for a commercial radio station such as Heart Fm

-Part of a show on Asda Fm

-And finally a talk show for ICR (Ipswich community radio)

The Second Part of This assignment was to make a 30minute show for a SNC Live (the college’s radio station) this show could be at any time of the day but it had to be recorded as live so we were able to use the radio station to record this show again we had to do running orders and scripts.
